Chapter Ten
The first thing the next morning, Texanna was up and Colton watched her, after his morning chores, as she began nervously to check her hair and her clothing. She even tried to put on some of that face powder she had before Colton spoke.
“She’s going to love you, honey, even in trousers and a work shirt.” He smiled as he remembered her mode of dress the day she changed his world forever.
“Like I would even dress like that to meet my mother for the first time. The very idea of meeting one’s mother for practically the first time, in men’s clothing is crazy. You know what they say about first impressions.”
Colt chuckled. “I sure do, not worth a hill of beans. My lovely wife, your mother, gave birth to you. You could never be less than beautiful to her. Besides, I spoke to her, remember? She is so anxious to meet you. She’s probably the one who should be nervous, the circumstances and all.”
“Well, you’re probably right. I mean, I stayed put for fifteen years after she left before a big, strong man with big strong arms, scooped me up—”
“And spanked you,” finished Colton. He had to dodge his bride’s hand coming fast for his shoulder. “Watch it, little girl, this big, strong man may spank again if you aren’t careful.” He swooped down and kissed his wife passionately, excited for her day’s plans.
They had just finished breakfast when a buggy pulled up.
“It’s the judge and your ma, honey.”
“Oh,” said Texanna as she swept past her husband looking toward the wagon that was nearing the house. “Oh, Colton, what is the judge’s name? You only ever called him Judge,” Texanna whispered.
“Jackson. Judge Andrew Jackson.”
She rolled her eyes. “Did every mama for thirty years name her son Andy Jackson?”
“Now you be nice. I am assigned to him and we work well together. Don’t cause him any embarrassment.” Colton was serious.
Texanna disregarded her husband’s darker look as ridiculous. “I know better than that. Look at my ridiculous name. Now get out here and introduce me,” Texanna instructed as she concentrated on the woman who sat in the now stopped buggy.
Once outside, Colton assisted Mrs. Miranda Carruthers Grant Jackson from her seat. Texanna noticed that she was walking a bit stiffly. If Texanna wasn’t mistaken, she recognized that walk and wondered if it could be true. If the honorable Judge Andrew Jackson prescribed to the same methods her husband did on getting his meaning across when his wife seemed slow to respond. Texanna walked over to where the judge had released the hand of a woman that looked eerily like Texanna herself, meeting her half way. She wondered how she missed that yesterday.
Tears were streaming down Texanna’s face as she looked at the woman who stared back and said, “Mama?”
“Texanna Rae, my beautiful daughter, you’re so like…” there was a hesitation, “my mother. Come here, darling.” Arms were spread wide to receive a now fully crying Texanna. The men left their women, who were oblivious to their presence.
